OWASSO SPORTS PARK WEATHER
SAFETY PROCEDURE

Lightning Detector
The Strike Alert 2, a portable lightning detection device that will be maintained by a Field Marshall and a Board Member at the Owasso Sports Park soccer fields. They will alert coaches, players, and others present if lightning is detected and of any approaching dangerous storm activity. The Strike Alert 2 offers the ability to detect the presence of lightning activity occurring within 40 miles of our location. The distance of the detected lightning strikes are indicated in four ranges: 0-6 miles, 6-12 miles, 12-24 miles, and 20-40 miles. Because the average stroke of lightning is 6 miles long, and because thunderstorms can move up to 25mph or more, you are in immediate danger any time lightning is detected within 6-12 miles of your location.

Criteria for Suspension of Activity

It maybe necessary for a Field Marshall or a Board Member to suspend activity if they feel that people are in jeopardy due to inclement weather in the area. At this time an Air Horn will be sounded with a long 3-4 second blast, at that time any and all fields will be evacuated and all people in the area should seek shelter immediately.

It is important to remember, that lightning has been reported to strike 10 miles away from where it is raining. And therefore we will suspend or postpone athletic or recreational activities if lightning is detected in the 6-12 mile range, the Field Marshall or Board Member will immediately sound the alert to suspend play and all individuals should take appropriate shelter.

Criteria for Return to Activity

 30-Minute Return-to-Play Rule

If a game, practice, or other activity is suspended or postponed due to lightning activity, we will use the following criteria for resumption of activity.  First, the storm will continue to be monitored.  Minimum wait time to return to activity will be 30 minutes after the last lightning detection or sound of thunder. Each time lightning is detected or thunder is heard the 30-minute clock will be reset. A blue sky or lack of rainfall is not an adequate reason to resume play, as lightning can strike far from where it is raining.  The Field Marshall or Board Member will sound two shorts blast for a return to play signal.

Seeking Appropriate Shelter

The primary choice for a safe location from lightning hazard is any substantial, frequently inhabited building.  The electrical and telephone wiring and plumbing pathways aid in grounding the building.  The secondary choice for a safe location from lightning hazard is a fully enclosed vehicle with a metal roof and the windows closed. You should avoid touching the sides of the vehicle.  Convertible vehicles, golf carts, etc, are not adequate areas of shelter. You should avoid high places and open fields, isolated trees, rain or picnic shelters, baseball dugouts, communication towers, flagpoles, bleachers, metal fences, convertibles, golf carts or any type of water.

Individuals who feel their hair stand on end or skin tingle or hear crackling noises should assume the lightning-safe position. This position is crouched on the ground, weight on the balls of the feet, feet together, head lowered and ears covered.  DO NOT LIE FLAT ON THE GROUND.  You must minimize the amount of contact that you have with the ground.
