Doug moved around the United States until 5th grade when his family finally settled in Broken Arrow. He grew up playing competitive soccer and helping his Dad coach recreational soccer at the Broken Arrow Soccer Club.

He accepted the U19 State Championship trophy as the captain of the Express Knights, one of Broken Arrow's very first competitive soccer teams coached by Oklahoma Soccer Hall of Fame member, Ernie Brown and was selected as one of 18 members of the Oklahoma State Select team in 1982.

After graduation he accepted a soccer scholarship from Missouri Southern State University where he was a 4 year Varsity starter and Tri-Captain. His college soccer career took him all over the Midwest, as well as abroad to play amatuer and semi-professional teams in Switzerland, Germany and Austria.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Missouri Southern and a Master's Degree in Aquatic Ecology from Virginia Commonwealth University.
